At the end of each week, I find myself with at least 3 perfectly spotty, ugly and totally icky looking bananas sitting in the fruit bowl.
Come Friday, each time I walk by the counter, the smell of sweet banana wafts up and makes me smile. You see, these bananas are what we call "sugar spotted". They are dangerously on the edge, perching precariously between ooey-gooey sweet and ooey-nasty rotten. Many people would toss these sad little bananas out but I want you to embrace them and give them a second chance!
When bananas are soft and at the "sugar spotted" stage, they are truly delicious and making homemade banana baby food is a breeze.
- Carefully peel the bananas
- Toss them in a bowl
- Mash away
There is no need to dice or cut up these bananas as they will melt into mash easily, and, you need only to use a fork. You can toss them into a blender or food processor if you wish but there is no need to dirty an appliance here.
So the next time you're tempted to give a disapproving glance and then toss those spotty and icky looking bananas, please give them a second chance. Embrace the spots! You and your little one won't be disappointed, I promise.
Bananas are a great first food for babies from 6 months old and on. Many babies start solids between 4 and 6 months of age and for those starting within this timeframe, bananas are an acceptable first food.
